At British Hemp Co, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that we’re rather fond of hemp.

But our enthusiasm for this remarkable plant goes far beyond simply selling hemp products. Hemp combines something increasingly difficult to find: great nutrition, versatility and a more sustainable approach to food.

Here’s why we think hemp deserves a place in more British kitchens.

1. It Packs a Lot of Nutrition into a Tiny Seed

Hemp seeds may be small, but nutritionally they have plenty to offer.

Shelled hemp seeds — often called hemp hearts — are naturally rich in protein and contain essential fatty acids, including omega-3, 6 & 9.

They’re also incredibly easy to add to everyday food.

Sprinkle hemp hearts over porridge or yoghurt, stir them into granola, add them to salads or simply eat a spoonful straight from the packet.

No complicated recipes. No dramatic changes to your diet. Just real food that happens to be very nutritious.

2. Hemp Is a Brilliant Source of Plant Protein

One of the reasons we became so passionate about hemp is its potential as a source of plant-based protein.

Hemp protein contains all nine essential amino acids and comes directly from the seed.

Our Hemp Protein Powders are produced from hemp seed after the oil has been cold pressed from it. Rather than wasting what remains, the nutritious seed material can be milled into protein-rich powders.

They work brilliantly in smoothies and shakes, but they can also be added to porridge, pancakes, bread and baking.

It’s plant protein without needing to make life complicated.

3. The Oil Is Something Special

Cold pressed hemp seed oil has a distinctive green colour and a wonderfully nutty, slightly grassy flavour.

More importantly, hemp seed oil naturally contains omega-3, 6 & 9 fatty acids.

We cold press the seeds rather than using harsh extraction processes. This produces a beautiful oil that can be drizzled over salads, vegetables, pasta and finished dishes.

You can even take it straight from the spoon.

Sometimes the simplest foods really are the best.

4. We Love the Whole Seed

One of the things we particularly like about hemp is just how much can be made from one little seed.

Remove the outer shell and you have delicious hemp hearts.

Cold press the seed and you get hemp seed oil.

The remaining seed material can then be used to produce hemp protein and fibre-rich foods.

That means the seed can provide oil, protein and fibre.

Not bad for something only a few millimetres across.

5. Hemp Has an Exciting Future in British Food

For many years, hemp has been misunderstood because of its relationship to cannabis.

But food-grade hemp is a very different proposition.

Hemp seeds have been eaten for generations, and today they are finding their way back into kitchens as more people look for nutritious plant-based foods.

We think that's a very good thing.

Rather than relying entirely on fashionable ingredients transported halfway around the world, hemp gives us the opportunity to develop nutritious foods from a crop that can be grown much closer to home.

6. It Fits into Normal Life

Perhaps this is the biggest reason we love hemp.

You don't have to completely change the way you eat to enjoy it.

A spoonful of hemp hearts on breakfast.

A scoop of hemp protein in a smoothie.

A drizzle of cold pressed hemp seed oil over your lunch.

A little extra fibre added to your favourite recipe.

Hemp can quietly become part of your everyday diet.

And that's exactly how we think good nutrition should work.

Our Love Affair with Hemp Is Just Getting Started

At British Hemp Co, we believe hemp deserves to be better understood, better appreciated and, most importantly, eaten by a lot more people.

It's nutritious, versatile and remarkably useful — and we're constantly discovering new ways to make the most of this extraordinary little seed.

So if you've never tried hemp before, perhaps now is the time.
