HOW IT STARTED
The British Hemp Company is the brainchild of MD Steve Glover, who set up the multiple award winning Severn Project in Bristol to provide education training and employment for socially excluded individuals through the commercial production of salads and herbs.
An accidental farmer, he quickly learned how to grow salad and herbs, and the business grew. Twelve years later, he applied for an industrial hemp license from the Home Office, and the Severn Project soon diversified into hemp juice. However, without the right team around him, his plans stalled. Undeterred, and with a few valuable lessons under his belt, Steve used his knowledge of all things hemp to set up a consultancy, working with UK hemp farmers. BRITISH GROWN HEMP
We are the only SALSA accredited vertically integrated hemp seed processing company operating at scale in the UK. That means the we support UK farmers and the creation of UK jobs. Using UK grown seed means that our carbon footprint is much reduced.
Our farmers grow the Finola variety, chosen for taste, oil content and ease of harvesting. Farmed correctly, hemp cultivation requires no pesticides or herbicides.
Unlike organic growers we test for glysophate and herbicides to ensure food safety. We also test for heavy metals, mycotoxins, peroxide levels and microbiology. Overall our testing regime means that we can safely say that our products are “better than organic”.
OUR UK MILL
We've invested in the very latest machinery and technology for our Warminster site, which we're proud to say is the UK's first hemp processing centre that is dedicated to working with British farmers.
This gives us total confidence in both the quality of our seeds and the quality of our nutritious and delicious hemp seed products.
In 2020 we started processing and shortly afterwards in 2021 we achieved a ISO9001 accreditation.
In 2022 we won the prestigious gold Nourish award for best ethical producer and also won the Silver Nourish award for our cold pressed hemp seed oil.
In 2024 we won a 3 star Nourish award (the top award) for our protein powder P50 and achieved SALSA certification.
